* Include direct textual evidence from Tuesdays with Morrie in your post. Evidence must be introduced with context and cited correctly.
* Your response should be a minimum of ten sentences. Use proper grammar, spelling, etc. and organization (topic and concluding sentences, transitions).
Topic: Morrie, as a professor of sociology and later a man dying of a terminal illness, often reflected on the meaning of life. One of Mitch Albom's main purposes in writing Tuesdays with Morrie was to share Morrie's wisdom with a wide audience. At this point in the book, consider Morrie's insights and wisdom you have read. For example, Morrie tells Mitch, "Well, for one thing, the culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. We're teaching the wrong things. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn't work, don't buy it. Create your own" (Albom 35). What piece of Morrie's wisdom or his outlook on life has made the strongest impression on you? Why? How does this wisdom/outlook relate to your own life?
Morrie has many pieces of wisdom on life. There are many that have made a strong impression on me. However, the phrase that has made the strongest impression is when Mitch was at Wimbledon. When he was there, he remembered something that Morrie had said to him. Mitch remembered him saying, "So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things that they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning"(Albom43). This made the strongest impression on me because of how true it is. For many people it's the same routine. Get up, go to work, go to bed, and repeat. It's a continuous cycle that doesn't seem to get anywhere. Many people do love what they do, and worked hard to get where they are at, however, there is that extra mile that may seem too hard to reach for some. That is what Morrie means when he talks about people chasing the wrong things. Many people are afraid to go the extra mile and get out of their comfort zone. If people pushed themselves that extra mile many great things would result from it. This relates to my life in the sense that I witness this. I see people everyday in school. Many people, including me, are on the same cycle. We get up, go to school, come home, do homework, then go to bed. Sometimes it feels like nothing is being accomplished. However, if you treat each day as your last, and have an open mind, your output on life will change. If you can go in each day saying you gave it your all then you can't ask for anything else. That is how the quote has made the strongest impression on me. It has taught me to go chase your dreams.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I thought you used your transition words very well and how you led into stuff. I thought you made a very good point on how people just get up and do the same thing day after day instead of going beyond, out of your comfort zone. The way you worded it made the quote sound a lot more meaningful to me.By the way I liked the quote that you used for this certain blog post. The example that hit me the hardest is the people at school, how we just get up, go to school then do homework and go to sleep. Only this b/c sometimes I can relate to this too. So overall, very well done Cory!

Great connection with the quote I felt like you really understood it. Your lead up to the quote gives everyone a feel for it even if they have not read the book yet. Your personal connection was great and really good comparisons. Nice Work Cory!
DeleteI really like the way that you compared Morrie to regular people and how they live there life. Secondly like what Ethan said I really like the way that you transitioned your sentences and lead them into what you were talking about. Also when you talked about how people have continuous work cycles that have no change. Finally you did a great job overall!
DeleteI like how you tied the quote in with not only your experiences but the way that everyone acts. Like what Ally said, your lead in to the quote was a very smooth transition. It made the quote easy to understand which is good for helping readers understand your connection of the quote to the way people go about their life.
DeleteGreat statement! You connected the quote to your experiences really well. I also considered using this quote in my response because it is very real that tomorrow isn't promised. I like how you said to cherish moments with family and friends and try to make a difference in the world before dying.
DeleteMorrie Schwartz is a wise man who has a positive outlook on life even when he is suffering. A piece of Morrie's wisdom, quoted from the novel Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, which has impacted me is, "Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live" (Albom 82). This quote had the strongest impression on me because through the quote, Morrie is saying in order to live life to its fullest someone must experience pain and suffering. Furthermore, the quote also puts into perspective how life is a blessing. Each person has one life to live, and each person has to live each day like it is their last. In addition to, this wisdom relates to my life because it can be applied to other aspects of life. For example, in the business world someone must learn how to fail before they can experience success. Following this further, the quote can also be interpreted to mean life should be taken one step at a time, and not rushed through. Rushing through life can result in opportunities to be missed, and the beauty of the world to be overlooked. To conclude, the quote, "Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live," is important wisdom because it reveals how the little things in life have the biggest impact on our lives.
ReplyDeleteI felt like you chose a really strong quote. You also explained this very thoroughly. I feel like you hit all the points needed in this blog and you put life into perspective. Great Job Jacob!
DeleteFirst of all I like the way that you said each person has a life to life and live your days like they are your last because thats what Morrie did. Another thing I like that you said is that life should be taken one step at a time and that if you rush through stuff then you might miss opportunities. Overall you did a really good job on this and I dont think you really have to work on anything to make it better.
DeleteI like how you emphasized how that quote relates to us now and in future situations. Quite like, without darkness there is no difference in light kind of thing.I agree how life is a blessing for all we know we only get one and we have to make the best of it. We do need to take life slow because if we go fast and we build it on quicksand it will only lead to a lonely and depressing end with so much unfulfilled.
DeleteIn Mitch Albom's novel "Tuesday's With Morrie" there was a quote that really hit me as I was reading. It made me stop and think, and ask myself the exact same question. This question should be significant to everyone because you never know when your life could so quickly be taken from you, so always live everyday if though it is your last. " What if today were my last day on Earth?"(Albom 64). In this day in age the future is very unexpected, so if you were told that you only had 24 hours left to live, what would you do for the last 24 hours of your life to make you happy? Again this quote is very significant to me because making choices that may not be very wise can lead you down a very harsh and horrifying rest of your life. So always think things through before you affect you or the others around you. Also if you are someone like Morrie who is facing a chronic illness and have the innibility to do the things you usually do, think back and ask yourself, did I make a difference in this world? so always charish every moment you have with your family and friends because that privelige will not last forever.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I think that your word choice for this blog post was well good. Along with that I thought is was very well written. Secondly I liked your quote that you used, it's a very powerful quote. I agree with your explanation too with this quote that you used. The overall blog post was well done, so nice job Jack!
Delete-Ethan Hays
Great job Jack! This is very powerful. Each day you have to treat it as a privilege not a right. There is no guarantee to tomorrow. As cliche as it sounds, you really do need to seize not only each day, but each moment. In a blink of an eye it can all be taken away from you. It was very powerful when you said when you're about to die or terminally sick did you make a difference in the world. I hope that the answer would be yes. This is relatable to not only me but many others. Overall, fantastic job! I can tell you put thought and time into this.
DeleteI thought that your choice of quote was great, and that it had a really cool message. Word choice was good also. Good job
DeleteI really liked the quote that you picked. This quote really got to me and made me think also what if it really was my last day on earth. I really wouldn't know how to spend it, but I liked how you explained that if you don't make a wise choice it can be harsh and lead to bad things. I agree with that 100%. Overall great job with this post Jack!

ReplyDeleteThroughout this book that we have been reading the past weeks I have learned many life lessons from a very inspirational man. His wisdom not only has an impact on the people who read his book, but also the people who have watched him on nightline. He has a very interesting aspect on life considering he is slowly dying of a terminal illness. He decides that he wants the world to know how he is feeling as he is going through the final times he has to be alive. He has a lifelong journey of memories that he is trying to tell the world before his final days come to an end. In the interview that we watched in class and also later in the book he talks about him being compared to the ocean. And in the ocean there are two parts there is the waves and there is the ocean. He talks about how he is not a wave and how he is the ocean. And when he talks about how he is not a wave he is referring to how he as a person helps people along with their journey, and he just keeps going along on his way as others pass him by. “You're not a wave, you are a part of the ocean”( 180, Albom). On more of a personal way of thinking about Morrie, I take away his great wisdom that he has shown through his sad journey.
In this novel "Tuesdays with Morrie" there are many inspirational things that Morrie says. How ever there is one quote that stuck out to me the most. The quote is "Learn to forgive your self and to forgive others"(Albom 18). This quote was the most meaningful one to me because to live life to the fullest you have to be able to forgive your own wrong doings and sins. And especially to forgive others b/c you will never be able to move on without the act of forgiving. Along with it making a big impact on me, it also correlates to Morrie b/c with this chronic illness, Morrie has to forgive him self. And for Morrie to pass away with a clean slate and to be free he has to forgive others for what ever they did to him. So that is why I chose this quote as the most meaningful quote to me so far in this novel "Tuesdays with Morrie".

Ethan I really enjoy your writing. You explained your quote in a profound way. You used great word choice. As well as great word choice your writing was written smoothly. Great job expressing your feelings. Just remember to write because correctly not b/c. And try to explain the quote a better when you introduce the quote. I also used the same quote. I feel very strongly about the quote as well. Overall nice job!
DeleteEthan, I agree with this quote 100%. I feel like you always have to forgive someone and forgive yourself because you never know what can happen, No one knows when their last day on earth is, so if you hold a grudge against someone and something happens to them I feel like you would have guilt inside you for the rest of you life. So it is always good to forgive. I really liked how you explained the quote. Great job Ethan!
DeleteGood job Ethan! I can relate to this as well. You can't dwell on the past. No matter what mistakes you have made you got to push through it. You can't change the past so you have to learn from your mistakes, and try not to do it again. Also, you're absolutely correct when you say you have to learn to forgive others. No one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. If you forgive someone it can make things feel a whole lot better. Overall, great job because I can tell that this quote meant a lot to you, and had you thinking deep about it. - Cory Witmer
Delete“Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom has a considerable amount quotes about wisdom that added to the reader’s outlook on life. Personally the quote that has made the strongest impression on me is when Mitch goes to London for work he remembered what Morrie once said about society, “ ‘So many people walk around with meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they’re busy doing things they think are important. This is because they’re chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to create something that gives you purpose and meaning’ ” (Albom 43). Morrie stated that people do not live life in a meaningful way because they are doing activities or jobs that do not bring them purpose, instead of doing those things that do not have immense outcome to their lives they should be surrounded by things that make them happy along with people they love. Furthermore this example Morrie’s wisdom made the strongest impression on me because I believe that this is one of the most troubling parts of today’s society. In addition, that quote relates to my own life because I devote myself into the things that I love to a great extent, along with devoting myself to my family and community, unlike floating by without any meaning, which is what most people do according to my observations and Morrie’s. In conclusion that quote had the strongest impression on me because it stated that instead of going about life in a meaningless way people should devote themselves to their loved ones, community, and things that gives them a sense of purpose.

ReplyDelete“Tuesdays With Morrie” contains very mind grabbing quotes and lets you drift off and really picture what Morrie is saying during these times. One of the quotes that grabbed my mind was “Accept what you are able to do and what you are not able to do.”(Albom 18) In other words this is a nicer way of saying know your limits or just be who you are and don’t try and be someone you're not. Morrie is a very wise and great man, and he does not let death take him over even in the worst of times. This is the reason that Morrie is so open with his disease because he does not let this disease conquer him. Morrie has inspired so many and will continue to inspire those that read this book. Morrie is living his life to the full potential. Even though death is grazing upon him he is still showing those that he will not fear the unavoidable future. Morrie is a very strong man for this and most people let death take them and conceal them and Morrie shows that he breaks out this containment to show people that he will not bow down to death. Morrie is a very wise man and passes a lot of that wisdom to other people during his times of struggle.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the quote that you have picked. It is very important to know what your limits are in life. You have to respect them and not push yourself to do something you know that you can not. Also how you explain his strength is a a very important part of understanding how his journey takes place.
DeleteI really emphasize this quote because a day in age where bad decisions are made which can lead you down the roughest path of life. In order to be successful you always have to know your own limits and never try exceeding them. In other words, always listen to your parents, even if you aren't happy with them, you are going to be thankful for all the advice your parents gave you over the years and hopefully pass it on to future generations. That is what I got out of your post and again this is a very strong quote to think about. But overall very well written and great description for the book.
DeleteIt is important to use the qualities given to us in order to make an impact on the world. People need to learn how to use their strengths to the best of their abilities, and not worry about what others have. Everyone is unique and the world can benefit from everyone's talents.

ReplyDeleteMorrie uses his wisdom in this novel "Tuesdays with Morrie" by twisting and turning things we don't think a lot about and creating a whole new meanings. I enjoy this novel because I see similarities between Morrie and my grandfather, in such ways of wisdom and sharpness. Morrie looks like an old charming man that can bring light to others. He does not want people to fear death but to soak in life. I feel that is very large aspect throughout my life as well. This quote that I enjoyed , Morrie says from his wisdom, "Learn to forgive yourself and to forgive others"(Albom 18). I like this quote because its says you almost have to forgive yourself of what you have done then forgive others for what they have done. Forgiveness is a strong word that can clear up and help you or others go through a situation.
I like that quote because the simplicity is so easy to understand that it also has a broader message that is open for interpretation. For example you said that the quote means to forgive yourself and then forgive others. But someone else might think that the quote is saying that it is all just one act in forgiveness, when you forgive yourself that you are also forgiving others.
DeleteMorrie also reminds me of my grandfather, but for different reasons. My grandpa died of pancreatic cancer, which is often considered the most deadly and untreatable form of cancer. I don't want to go too into detail about his illness but it was a slow painful death, just like Morrie's, however my grandpa's reaction to his impending death contrasts deeply with Morrie's reaction. My grandpa became sour, introverted, and nasty as his death neared. He didn't feel obligated at all to spend time with family. My mom thought it might be because he didn't want to burden us with taking care of him even though his death was inevitable and he was unsaveable. My dad assumed it was just because he'd been a pessimist his entire life. In the words of Morrie, "If you don't have the support and love and caring and concern that you get from a family, you don't have much at all. Love is so supremely important"(Albom 91). My grandpa didn't see things the same way as Morrie, and because of his pessimistic view, he died unhappy.
DeleteIn the novel "Tuesdays with Morrie" I have learned a lot of inspirational things from only a short time reading the novel. One thing I learned from it is to always live your life with happiness and that even when times are tough to always stay positive and happy. The quote that really stuck out to me is " What if today were my last day on Earth?"(Albom 64).This stuck out to me because he is living life like an any ordinary day but in the back of his mind he wonders if it is the last day of his life. Most people at this stage in there life would be a little sad and depressed knowing that there life is coming to an end. Even when Morrie thinks about his life coming to an end he still stays positive and acts like nothing were to even ever happen. Finally I hope that what I learn from Morrie in this novel stays with me forever.
ReplyDeleteLiving your life with happiness is very important because of how you never know what will happen to you. Living every day like its your last is a very important concept that this book illiterates. His wisdom is demonstrated with the quote you picked.
DeleteThis quote is very meaningful and should have some purpose in everyone's lives. Because going into things with a negative attitude can have a negative output on who you are and what people think of you. This is a great quote that goes along very well with the novel, because though Morrie is living with a very severe disease he maintains a healthy life and positive attitude. Overall, very well written and very nice choice of textual evidence.
DeleteLiving your life to the fullest is so important. Morrie taught us how to do that throughout the novel. This quote means so much because Morrie didn't know when he was going to die and in my opinion he wanted more time to get his lessons in. I think if Morrie had more time he would have a lot more lessons to teach that would mean a thousands times more to us.
DeleteMorrie is an old professor that is dying of a somewhat common illness. He appeared on an episode of Nightline where he was asked for some wisdom for the public. One piece in particular of Morrie's wisdom that has put an impression on me is said on those first pages; 'Accept the past without denying it or discarding it,"(Albom 18). This has had an impact on because of the mistakes I have made. They are few but contain so much. I should not deny what I did because I did do it and I need to own up to them. Also that I should ponder on what I did. Think about how to avoid doing something like that and how I could stop others from doing it.Going further I take it as how one could make so many mistakes and when they do discard them they just do them again and again. I could no longer follow my dreams.
ReplyDeleteThat quote is great because it is advising that the past is in the past and you can not change anything about it, so accept that it happened and move on but make sure that you learned from it. The past is full of good things and bad things, but its good to learn from both of them then incorporate it into future.
DeleteI like how this quote relates to everybody. Everyone has messed up before, and everyone can move on. Mistakes are an essential part of life, so we can grow as people and become successful. Lastly, it is important not to dwell on mistakes because it will only leave us feeling bad.
DeleteI can really relate to this quote and i feel that when we make a mistake we must acknowledge that we have done something wrong but we cant get too hung up on it and dwell or we will only hold ourselves back.
DeleteIn the novel "Tuesdays with Morrie", an important vignette is provided into the slowly decaying body and mind of a college sociology professor afflicted with a crippling disease known as ALS, or Lou Gherig's disease. In light of his illness, he delivers to the book's author Mitch Albom, a former student of his, a series of ruminations on life and death in the approaching imminence of his own demise. He gives many pieces of wisdom to Mitch but, among them, one was especially noteworthy. In talking about his illness and approaching death, Morrie discusses his newfound spirituality and acceptance of his own death in the form of a story. "'The second wave says, 'No, you don't understand. You're not a wave, you're part of the ocean,''"(Albom 180). Through this story, Morrie learns to view himself not as a single individual, sad to die, but as a tiny, tiny piece of humanity who is excited to pass into another form of existence, and live on in his words, and others' memories of him. I think that this is a very wise way to look at things, and that it's the most meaningful quote in the book to me.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this is the most profound aspect of Morrie's teachings. The way Morrie's analogy where he compares himself to a wave in the ocean, and the idea behind that comparison makes me think about the idea of Panentheism. Panentheism can be described as the belief that divinity pervades all spaces in the universe, including human beings. A quote that also relates to the topic of living on in others' memories: "love is how you stay alive, even after you are gone"(Albom 133).
DeleteI too agree with brendan that was one of my favorite quotes the one about the wave in the ocean its so smart and a great analogy
DeleteI agree with you view on this. The way he brings up not just being a small wave but your apart of the whole ocean. Its a great analogy to use for the theme of the novel.
DeleteIn the novel, "tuesdays with Morrie," by Mitch Albom there are multiple inspirational and interesting lines. After reading more into the book I have found that one of the best peices of text that I find most inspiring is when Morrie says "All right its just fear, I don't have to let it control me. I see for what it is" (Albom 105). I find this is best because everyone at some point in their life will go through fear, but it's up to you on how you handle it. This quote is expressing that if you expect the fear it will start to get better and easier on taking it on. Personally I have feared a lot about coming to high school and starting this new chapter in my life but I'm taking it one day at a time. Through Morries speaking I have connected through my own experiences and can relate.
ReplyDeleteHe had two goals in life, to meet his creator, and to make others smile.
ReplyDeleteIn the novel, "tuesdays with Morrie," by Mitch Albom there are so many inspirational quotes by Morrie. My favorite quote is when Morrie says "All right its just fear, I don't have to let it control me I see for what it is" (Albom 105). I think this is a verry good quote because i too have experienced fear, and my parents told me a similar saying. This quote is saying that rather than let fear control you brush it off dont even worrie about it. Personally i was scared for midterms and the finals but i know if i study hard that i have nothing to worry about. Through Morries speaking I have connected his own words of wisdom to my experiences and feelings.
ReplyDelete"So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning,"(47). What exactly does this quote mean? Can you relate? This quote is saying don't chase things to make you better than everyone else. You'll truly be happy if you can be a better you and the people around you. I love this quote because I feel like I'm always trying to find a meaning in life. What's the point? Not just my life but the people close to me. Try devoting yourself to something you don't do often and maybe you'll find a meaning there. There's always a meaning wherever you go, you just have to dig deep.
