Post 2: A Meaningful Life

Post 2: A Meaningful Life

Assigned: Wednesday, May 10th
Response due: Monday, May 15th

* Your response should be a minimum of ten sentences.  Use proper grammar, spelling, etc. and organization (topic and concluding sentences, transitions).

Tuesdays with Morrie communicates what Morrie Schwartz believed to be the key to living a meaningful life.  He told Mitch, "So many people walk around with a meaningless life.  They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important.  This is because they're chasing the wrong things.  The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning" (Albom 43).

What is the key(s) to a meaningful life for you?  If you were to look back on your life at the end of your life, how would you have spent your time?  What would you have focused on?  What beliefs or values would have influenced you? What goals would you have pursued and achieved?

* In your post, INCLUDE YOUR LIFE'S SENTENCE written in class on Wednesday, May 10th.

  1. POST 2 A MEANING FULL LIFE:
To me a meaningful life needs ten essential keys. Number one know whats important, like family and faith not partying and great grades it family. Number two you need to pursue your passion so many people are depressed in life because they are stuck doing something they hate so at least try and go for it. Number three the most important to me is people more than things much like the first this means spend time with the ones you love not things things arent important but the ones you love are. Now on to the fourth find your lifes purpose if you had to give yourself a reason to live what would it be? without a reason your just in a dead end and it can be depressing very depressing. You also have to be self aware and aware of the things you are doing or it can end up bad in many ways such as you can ruin a relationship with the one you love and that can be very devastating. The third and a very important one focus dont work on three goals you have a much greater success rate if you focus on one goal and or task at a time. The Dalai Lama once said "one must be compassionate to ones self before external compasion" be compassionate we all must learn to love and be nice to one another we dont know what can bring a person down we could also be bring ourself down. The 8th way is to give back one that can be helpful to many people, when helping others they feel good and when you help them you too feel good. The last and a very important one is to simplify your life if you try and do to many things at once it can be difficult and for me many times stressful.

    1. First of all I like how you said you need ten essential keys, I think that makes each key sound more important. Secondly I thought it was very well written and you had good word choice. Lastly, I thought you did a very well on this! I don't believe that you need to work on anything. Very good job!!

    2. I love that you put family and faith first it would be first for me too. Over years and years you will meet lots of people but the important people that will stay with you forever are your family. They are the closest friends. I also agree that faith should be first too. On your fourth essential you asked a question and if I were to answer that I would say. a reason to live for me is that one day I could spread more life on and have children that can experience the greatness in life even though there are some badness in life. In my opinion the good over rules the bad if you just turn off the news! LOL nice job though Joe.

  2. There are a lot of key factors I believe go into having a meaningful life. I feel the absolute most important thing is to have faith and put yourself first. This is extremely important because you cant live happy if you don't like yourself and only throw negative thoughts in your head. I have focused mostly on putting myself first while trying to make people happy and creating a good reputation for myself which I feel I've done nicely. A belief that has most influenced me is hat everything happens for a reason. This has made a big impact of me because even in the hardest of times like when you lose a best friend, a game, or something goes very wrong you can know that it happened for a reason. One goal I have achieved is just being happy. I have wasted too much time worrying about the little things and now I can be a more positive person while continuing to check things off my bucket list. Finally my sentence that I feel best describes me at this point in my life is, "She painted the world, captured her passion, and didn't let go."

  3. There’s no correct way to live a meaningful life. What I mean is it’s all your own preference. If you believe that you lived a meaningful life, then good for you. Now, if I were to look back at the end of my life on how I should have spent my time? I would have spent my time with my family and my friends. Being more active with them and doing more activities with them. I should be spending my time with the right people and at the right places. Secondly, I would have focused on how to make myself a better person and how to make the world a better place. I also would have focused on the things that mean the most to me. For example my family and friends. Third of all, what are some beliefs or values that would have influenced you? Well, one would be god. I believe in god and one day I believe that we will all go to heaven. A value that would have influenced me is the game of basketball. Basketball has definitely influenced me in so many positive ways! Fourth of all, some goals I have achieved. I achieved my own personal goals including academics and sports. Lastly, my sentence that I would like people to say when i’m gone. He was a loving, caring, happy man, and he was a winner for sure.

    1. Ethan, good job on this! I believe 100 % that you make life how you want it. As they say, "You control your destiny." I would also have hoped to spend as much time with the people that mean something to me. I agree also that I would want to spend my time with the right people who have guided me, and I could guide them. Basketball has also influenced me just as it has influenced you. It has allowed me to form strong bonds with people. When you're part of a team you go through adversity. You must fight through it together. These bonds will be very important for not just you and I, but many others as well. Once again, great job!

    2. I like how you said there was not a true meaning to life because everyone lives life different. Also I like how you said at the end of your life how would you have wanted to live it when you were younger. Finally I really like this response and I don't think you really need to work on anything. Great job!

    3. Very nice job Ethan, I agree with you totally, I also believe that people make their lives the way they want them to be and that was perfectly portrayed in your response. I like how you included your passion with basketball which is the way you want your life to shape out. And the sky is the limit for everyone who believes so. Very well written and overall just an outstanding job!

  4. A meaningful life to me is having made an impact on something. Whether you affected the world or the way someone views the world, I believe you had a meaningful life. If you never have any effect on anything or change anything or anyone, then no one will remember you and your life would have had no meaning. If you’re not going out and taking part in changing anyone or anything then what are you really doing? You’re just going mindlessly through boring days that have no point. To live a meaningful life you must have a point to each day. You must have a purpose for the things you do. You must live life to the fullest. Go out and do things. Don’t just sit in the same job and routine everyday for your whole life. If you affect someone and change their viewpoint on something, even if they’re a stranger and you only talk for 1 minute, then you can be remembered and you did something a little different that day that no one else could have done. You have to live a life outside the box. Because only you have the potential to do things that only you can do. If you unlock that potential, then you can change the world in big or little ways that no one else could. My life’s sentence would be “She was determined, creative, and inspiring” because I am determined to live a meaningful life and I aspire to be very creative and be an inspiration to others.

    1. I like your meaning on life. I think when you are dying and you look back onto your life that it would feel so rewarding to know that you made an impact on something. That impact could be something as big as a new scientific discovery that saves millions of lives, to something as small as smiling to a person in the hallway that makes their day. I also like your life's sentence I feel that fits who you are very much.

  5. A meaningful life is what you want it to be. When you are born you are given a fresh start to be who you want to be. You don't have anything going against you, or any responsibilities. As you get older you begin to understand what you want it life. You decide if you are going to be positive or negative, be nice to others, stand out, or decide to not care. All of those decisions are given to you so you can make your live the way you want it to be. I always try to be positive and be nice to others. That is important to me because you never know what someone is going through in their life, just you saying hi to them can make their day. Being different from everyone else is always a good thing because that means no one is like you. All of these aspects of life are apart of what I think is a meaningful life for me and the ones I surround. My sentence would be “She tried to be different do know one else would be like her”. In this sentence I am explaining how important and meaningful it is to do what makes you happy and care for others.

    1. I noticed that you said "a meaningful life is..." While other people said "The meaning of life is..." I like how you put that because in a way the meaning of life is the same as living a meaningful life. Everyone knows their own meaning of life that they live by, even though other people may not agree with it, sometimes you may not know that you know the meaning of life until you take a step back and see if you are living a meaningful life. If you are living a meaningful life then you know your meaning of life. For example I think that I am living a pretty meaningful life so I must know the meaning of life deep down inside me, other wise I do not think that I would be living a meaningful life.

    2. Good job! I really like how you said that everyone has different versions of a meaningful life. Also how you believe that you should be different because no one else would be the same as you.

  6. The meaning of life is to find the meaning of life. I cannot answer this question as a 14 year old. I do not think that anyone, no matter what age or how much knowledge they have can truly and accurately answer this question. If I were to look back at my life at the end of my life I would have been surrounded by my family. I would have focused on being happy, I think it is very important not to take things to seriously. The beliefs and values that would have influenced me would have been from how I was raised, from the TV shows I watched to the deep talks I have with my parents. The goals that I would have achieved are being around the ones that I unconditionally love. Lastly, the sentence that I would write about my life is: 'She was made up of jokes, arguments, and questions'. I think that sentence says a lot about me because I love to laugh, have healthy light arguments, and question everything.

    2. I like how you chose no to answer the question because it is hard to answer at our age. Like what Morrie said about when you learn to die you learn how to live. It's only until later that you learn what the meaning of life is. Good job!

  7. In life many factors come to play in terms of having a meaningful life. Fist, if you look back at your life did you make a difference someone or something else. If not no one will look at you as a significant difference maker in their lives. But if you have, more things will come you're way such as kindness and respect from those around you. Another key factor is spending time with family and friends. This plays a large role because spending time with the people you love the most shapes who you are and the way you see the world. Always be involved with these people, don't just let you're life slip away and not have anything positive to look back on. When I look back at my life and restarted, I would definitely focus on school more then I have because every day I regret things like not studying enough for a big test, not trying hard enough on homework assignments, procrastination. All these things drive me to be the best person I could possibly be. Also, I would have tried harder to be more involved in basketball, especially because this is the sport that I'm most passionate about. All these things involve mistakes that are made along the way. Saying this, the sentence that I would like people to say when I'm gone is, "He was the student of his own mistakes before he was the teacher".

    1. Jack, good job! You make many great points. It is very true that when you spend time with friends and family they help shape you. You make a good point when you mentioned about being involved with your loved ones. You will be a better person by being with the people that mean something to you. You can't dwell on the past. Everyone makes mistakes and knowing you, I know that mistakes do drive you to be a better person. There's always light at the end of the tunnel. Mistakes can be a blessing in disguise because you can learn from them and not make them again. Overall, fantastic job, and keep up the good work!

  8. The Key to a meaningful life to me is to live in the moment. Enjoy your surroundings, such as family and friends. We live in a world where most of us are stressed or have so many worries. We all need to take a step back and relax. There is no point in being stressed out and worried. You were put here for a reason, and that reason is up to you to find it. You can only control what you can control. When it is my time to reflect on my life at the end of my life I would hope to acknowledge that I made a difference. I would hope to have spent it with my loved ones and with the people who make me happy. I would focus on if I made a difference. Did I pass on knowledge that will help someone in the future? Did I say something that lit a spark in someone? Those are the type of questions that I would ask myself and if I answered yes to them I feel my purpose will have been met. A big belief in my family is to always respect others. You don’t know where they came from or been through. My goals I would hope to pursue and achieve is to have a family. I want to be able to have a family who I can see grow before my eyes. I then would hope my family and I would make a difference in the world such as donating to charities. Every person has a right to live, and to give someone a chance, there’s not a better feeling. Finally, the sentence I would want to live by and people to go along with it is “ Enjoy the journey, it won’t last forever.” Life is a journey with unexpected twists and turns. It’s your job to find a way around it and live with it. No matter how hard life can be, there are so many great aspects about it. Always spend time with the people who have influenced you, and mean something to you. One day it will be gone. Act as a sponge, and soak everything you can because your journey is just getting started.

  9. A life is only meaningful if people our control of their lives. Many times people get caught up in the flow of life, which leads them to be unhappy. So, as people it is important we learn how to stop and slow down before we become unhappy. On the other hand, looking back on my life I would have spent my time with my family. I would have spent time with my family because spending time with our families is very undervalued, but it is what builds us as people. I would have focused more on the outside world because there are a lot of possibilities to define ourselves in the outside world, which we overlook. The belief that there is always another day has had an impact on me. This impacted my life because if something did not work out today, there is always tomorrow to do something great. In conclusion, my sentence about living a meaningful life is, "It's not about how long you live, but how you spend each minute." This is significant to me because we are all given different amounts of time on our lives, but what we do with each minute is what leaves a lasting impact on the world and those around us.

  10. What is a meaningful life? A meaningful life is to live from the start to the finish. When your born until you die. Many people live life through many freedoms. 12. A Meaningful life to me is to live life with out any regrets. At the end of your life with having no regrets is a meaningful life to me because it would show that you lived life the way you wanted too and not looking back saying what you could of done. So if I died today and lived life without any regrets, then I feel like I lived a good and meaningful life. My sentence is "He was a good person, Loved sports, and lived life with No Regrets.

  13. The meaning to life is very simple, but includes so much. It includes, but is not exclusive to, being happy, having fun, be loving, and always try to do some good. If I were to look back on my life I would hope people would just say I was a kind old guy that loved my family and always wanted the best for people. Some things that would've focused on are, making the best environment for my family, my job, and helping people who needed it. Some of the Things that would influence me are very basic but meaningful to me, my family, religion, politics, whether, the economy, and if my nuclear bunker is complete. They would influence me because all these things could harm my family. I don’t want a lot but what I do want is my family and I would want to keep them safe. Some of my goals would be to have a nice house with some gardens where I would grow my own food, have a nice relationship with my family,go to church and donate to charities, when I am in my 20’s I will want to join the peace corp and help people, have a respectable image in the military, and build a really cool bunker from a titan 2 missile silo. However, if I was unable to do all these I would still be happy with my family and friends. I would always be there.

  15. The key to a meaningful life to Morrie is for everyone to respect each other. One of my keys to a meaningful life is to mean something to everyone that I know in a good way that is. Some people will obviously disagree with me on certain topics, but I hope I got get to a middle ground with everyone. Another one of my keys in life is to be remembered. I would spend the last moments of my life cherishing my family and letting them know it is alright to let go. My beliefs that everyone should be treated equally would still be applied I would not want special treatment as I would just want to live my life. I would try and pursue becoming a great person.

  18. A meaningful life to me is one where it wasn't wasted worrying about petty things, and instead living for yourself, whether that's playing music or helping people or being in love with someone or just focusing on the esoteric aspects of existence as a human. The vast majority of popular today religions focus so heavily on what happens after you die that their adherents throw away what their lives could have been while they were alive. In the cosmic blink of an eye where I'm going to exist, I want my life to have some kind of meaning to both myself, and other people. Basic, if abstract, concepts like charity, happiness, and love are things which do not tangibly exist, but are essential, in my opinion, to living an important and meaningful life. People live for the future because they have to. In today's world, people work work work work work their lives away to make enough money to live. I won't pretend like I think it's truly possible to change it, but I just wish that humanity could get another chance; that life could be more focused on art and music and just truly enjoying life as it happens. Life is temporary and absolutely full of potential. Live it to the fullest. Condensed into one sentence, I think that I would say "Don't be petty,". Life is too short to care about stupid things. Do you for you. Do what makes you happy in the time that you have, because you don't have a lot of it. Every year, a year becomes a smaller amount of time in relation to your life. It goes faster and faster and faster and then you die. Make something out of yourself. "Don't be petty" is a sentence I identify strongly with, and I simply believe that. Don't worry about trivialities, whatever one perceives them to be.

  19. What is meaningful in your life? Do you have a reason? I can answer that question for you. Yes. If you want to have a meaningful life, surround yourself with things that make you happy and that define you. Music, art, sports, family, and friends. Enjoy it what you have while you still have it. Morrie enjoyed life and he lived a great one. I always think if i had a second chance at life, what things i might do differently? What would you change if you had a choice?
